Who is the Holy Spirit?

What is his role in the trinity?

The Holy Spirit carries out the will of God, as evidenced now by his indwelling of believers, his watch over the church, and in events such as Pentecost in Acts 2, in which the Holy Spirit allowed Peter and other Apostles to communicate in different languages, beginning a mass conversion that would be the forming of the Church.

What Did he do in the Scriptures?

  • He was present at creation as "the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters." Genesis 1:2
  • He would bless and stay with God's favored people, such as those who built the tabernacle, Exodus 31, or King David, 1 Samuel 16:13
  • When God gave the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament, it was often temporary and to carry out events, and if this individual rebelled against God, the spirit would be removed, such as King Saul, the rebellious prophet Balaam, or the world before the flood, Genesis 6:13.
  • The Holy Spirit empowers Jesus in his earthly ministry. The Holy Spirit came upon Jesus as a dove when he was baptized by John the Baptist

'When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”'

Matthew 3:16-17

What is our relationship to him?

Throughout History, God has been drawing closer to us. When he created the world, we were in the Garden of Eden, walking with him, and we sinned, and he separated from us.

He was with the Israelites in the mountain as he gave his law, in the tabernacle as he dwelt with his people, in the temple in the holy of holies, where people would come to worship him. Yet there was always a separation, such as the veil in the temple that blocked the people's vision of God, serving as a barrier between them and God.

Then he stepped down in human form and dwelt among us, Jesus Christ, and when Jesus died his sacrificial death, the veil was torn down the middle. The barrier between God and us was gone, and he was no longer in the temple; he would be dwelling with us, teaching us, guiding us, and loving us.

'But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. '

John 14:26
