Are you going to Heaven or Hell?

What Happens After We Die?

When someone dies they come before God and for judgement and they can either go to Heaven or Hell

Heaven

Heaven is where God dwells, and all of its inhabitants live in bodies free of corruption and sin, forever rejoicing in a world without corruption. You will experience the greatest satisfaction in Heaven as the struggles of living in a fallen world no longer burden you. You will be free of sin as you are in a perfect state. When God has eradicated all of the sin from the world one day, there will be a new Heaven and a new Earth!

'Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”'

Revelation 21:1,3-4

Hell

Hell is where God carries out justice for all eternity for those who sinned and rebelled against God while on Earth. It is described as a place of weeping and gnashing of teeth, darkness, and isolation as those who have sinned against an infinite God receive an endless punishment.

'But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”'

Revelation 21:8

How is it decided where you go?

God takes joy in mercy, not judgment, and has a desire for all to go to Heaven; however, we have sinned and deserve punishment, and God will not fail to uphold justice.

The only way for Heaven to be perfect is for perfect people to be in it; otherwise, it would be subject to corruption and not be Heaven.

If you have sinned against God your righteous judgment is for you to go to Hell because that is the deserved condemnation for all.

What is Sin?

Sin is the defiance of God, anything that you do that God forbids in scripture and doesn't glorify him. Sin takes the image of God in us and denies following God's character.

Examples:

  • God is our provider, so when we steal, we deny that God provides
  • God is the truth. When we lie, we deny God
  • God is sovereign over life and death, so when someone is murdered, they try to take God's sovereignty over life and death
  • God is love, so when we hate what we shouldnt, we deny God
  • We even reject God when we don't do the physical act of sin but desire it in our heart because God knows us and desires not just meaningless action but for your heart to be in the right place as well

What if I am a good person?

You may view yourself as a good person, and by societal standards, you may be viewed as a good person by your community, colleagues, friends, and family. Yet this is not the standard God holds you to; that's the standard you hold yourself to.

God has declared that all unrighteousness needs to be punished, and it only takes one sin for you to deserve hell, if that's stealing, lying, lusting, or anything else God speaks against in the Bible.

So, What Hope is there for me?

You have no hope for yourself until you give up hope in yourself and look to Christ. Christ lived the perfect life that we could not live, he suffered the punishment of our sins upon the cross, and conquered the grave so that we could live!

If you repent of your sins and submit yourself to Jesus Christ as your God and savior, God will not judge you on your deeds in life but on his, and because he lived a perfect life, God will have mercy on you because he stands in your place!

'But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken. And they made His grave with the wicked— But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth. Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities.'

Isaiah 53:5-11
